Insights · A guide to maternity photography
Pregnancy lasts only a few months, and your bump changes every week. A maternity session is a way to keep this time exactly as it was: you, your partner and the wait for the baby on the way.
In this guide you will find the best time for your session, what to wear, where it can take place and how to prepare, so that it is a calm and enjoyable hour for you.

When to book your maternity session
Most photographers recommend the period from about week 28 to week 34. By then your bump has taken its shape, while most mothers-to-be still feel comfortable enough to stand, walk and change outfits.
If you are expecting twins, the bump grows faster and tiredness sets in sooner. That is why a slightly earlier window is usually suggested, from about week 26 to week 32.
Before you choose a date: ask your doctor. Every pregnancy is different, and your doctor will know whether you should schedule it earlier or avoid anything in particular.
A practical tip: book your session a few weeks early. That way, if you need to reschedule because of the weather or tiredness, you will still have time.

What to wear
Clothes make a big difference to the result. You don't need anything expensive. You need something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, and that lets your bump show.
- Solid, soft colours. White, beige, pastels or black. Busy patterns and large logos draw the eye away from you.
- Long dresses that move. A light, flowing dress adds movement, especially outdoors.
- Fitted clothes that show off your bump. A dress that hugs your body, or a cropped top with an open shirt, works very well.
- No tight waistbands on the day. Wear loose clothes before the session so that no marks show on your skin.
- Partner and children in coordinating colours. You don't need to match. It is enough that your colours go well together.
- Two outfit changes. For example, one simpler and one more elegant, so you have some variety.
You choose and bring your own clothes. At our first conversation we can go through what you have together and see what will suit the location you choose.

Four different outfit choices: a flowing dress, a white shirt with jeans, a black outfit and a light-coloured dress.
Where the session can take place
The session takes place wherever you want. There is no single “right” location, only the one that suits you.
- Studio. Controlled light, warmth, quiet and space to change outfits. Ideal in winter, or when you want a clean, minimal look.
- Outdoors. A beach, a park, a forest or a place that means something to you. Natural light and scenery give livelier images.
- At your home. A familiar setting, perhaps with the nursery you are getting ready.
- Your own idea. If you have a special idea or a creative project in mind, we will talk it through and set it up together.

Beach, park, forest and studio: the location completely changes the character of the photos.
Light, timing and comfort
If the session takes place outdoors, timing matters. The soft light early in the morning or shortly before sunset flatters the skin and gives warm tones. Around midday, roughly from 11:00 to 15:00, the sun is strong, casts harsh shadows and the heat is tiring, especially in summer.

The session lasts about an hour. We take breaks whenever you need them, and we won't ask you to hold difficult poses. A few things that help:
- Water and a small snack.
- Comfortable shoes for the walk to the location.
- A light cardigan in case it is windy or cool.
- A good night's rest beforehand and a light meal before the session.
Partner, children and pets
A maternity session doesn't have to be only about the mother. Many of the warmest photos are the ones with your partner: a hand on the bump, a kiss, a look. If you already have children, they can join in and share the wait for their little brother or sister. And if your dog is part of the family, it is welcome too.

Small objects make the photos more personal: your ultrasound pictures, a pair of baby shoes, a little sign with a message or a flower. Bring whatever means something to you.

And after the birth
A maternity session is often the first chapter. Many families go on to photograph their baby in the first months, then book a family photo session and later baptism photography. When the same photographer takes the photos, your story has continuity and a consistent style.
